Express Entry is often described as a points system, but eligibility and ranking are two different stages. A candidate first needs to qualify under at least one federal Express Entry program. Only then does CRS ranking and the invitation system become the central question.
The three federal programs
Express Entry manages the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program. The programs use different work-experience, language, education and other eligibility rules. A candidate can be eligible under more than one program.
Eligibility before CRS
A high-looking CRS calculation does not cure a failure to meet the underlying program rules. Work experience needs the correct NOC/TEER analysis, language results must meet minimum thresholds, and foreign education may require an ECA. The profile should be built from evidence that can later be produced.
What can affect CRS
Age, education, official-language results, Canadian and foreign work experience, spouse factors and certain additional factors can influence CRS. Provincial nomination can be especially significant. Candidates should distinguish between factors they can improve and factors they cannot change.
Category-based and program-specific invitations
IRCC can conduct different types of invitation rounds, including category-based selection. The relevant cut-off and eligibility conditions depend on the round. A candidate should therefore monitor more than one number and understand whether their occupation, language profile or program aligns with current selection priorities.
Document strategy after an invitation
An Invitation to Apply turns profile declarations into a document-heavy permanent residence application. Employment letters, proof of funds where required, police certificates, civil-status documents and travel history should support the profile consistently. This is where earlier shortcuts can become material.

Do I need a job offer for Express Entry?
Not for every Express Entry program. Job offers can still be relevant in particular circumstances and provincial pathways.
Can I enter the pool before taking a language test?
Generally, an eligible language test result is needed to create a valid Express Entry profile.
Is CRS the same as the Federal Skilled Worker 67-point grid?
No. The FSW selection-factor grid is part of determining eligibility for that program; CRS is the ranking system used in the Express Entry pool.
