Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Toronto skyline with a Canadian flag representing immigration to Canada

The Canadian Experience Class is an Express Entry program for skilled workers who have qualifying Canadian work experience and want to become permanent residents. It is often relevant to former international students and temporary foreign workers, but Canadian experience alone does not automatically establish eligibility.

At a glance

  • Eligible skilled Canadian work experience
  • NOC/TEER classification and duties
  • Minimum language requirements based on occupation
  • Express Entry profile and CRS ranking after minimum eligibility is met

Canadian work experience

IRCC requires qualifying Canadian skilled work experience obtained within the applicable period and while authorized to work. The NOC selected should correspond to the work actually performed, including the lead statement and main duties.

Language ability

The minimum language level depends on the TEER category of the qualifying occupation. Approved test results must be valid when required by IRCC.

Education and ranking

CEC does not impose the same education minimum as the Federal Skilled Worker Program, but Canadian or assessed foreign education can contribute to CRS ranking.

Common review points

Status while working, self-employment, work performed while studying, hours, job duties, employer letters and inconsistencies between past applications and the Express Entry profile deserve careful review.
