Most foreign nationals who want to work in Canada need legal authorization to do so. Canadian work permits are generally either employer-specific or open, and the correct category depends on the worker’s circumstances and the legal basis for the permit.

- Employer-specific work permits
- LMIA-based and LMIA-exempt work authorization

Employer-specific permits
An employer-specific work permit normally identifies the employer and may include the occupation, location and period of authorized employment. The employer may require an LMIA unless an exemption applies.
Open work permits
Open work permits are available only in defined circumstances. A person cannot choose an open permit simply because it would be more convenient.
Timing and status
Applicants inside Canada should pay close attention to permit expiry dates, maintained status, eligibility to apply from inside Canada and whether they may continue working while an application is pending.
Employer and worker evidence
The application may depend on the job offer, LMIA or exemption code, employer compliance steps, qualifications, licensing, immigration history and proof that the worker can perform the proposed job.
