PGWP Canada 2026: Eligibility After Graduation

University students studying together in a Canadian library

The Post-Graduation Work Permit can be the bridge between Canadian studies and skilled Canadian work experience, but PGWP eligibility has become more technical. School eligibility, program length, language results, field of study and application timing can all matter.

The 180-day application window

An eligible graduate generally needs to apply within 180 days after the school confirms completion. Waiting for a convocation ceremony is not the same thing as waiting for academic completion documents, and timing should be calculated conservatively.

Language requirements now matter

Current rules require many degree and university graduates to demonstrate CLB/NCLC 7 in all four abilities. Many college, polytechnic and non-university graduates require CLB/NCLC 5. The applicable rule depends on the program type and transition provisions.

Field-of-study rules

Some non-degree graduates must have completed a program in an eligible field of study. IRCC has frozen the eligible field-of-study list for 2026, but applicants still need to identify the correct CIP code and determine whether the requirement applies to them.

Program and DLI eligibility

Not every program at every designated learning institution leads to a PGWP. Public-private curriculum arrangements and other delivery models can affect eligibility, so the exact program should be checked before relying on a future work permit.

Work authorization while waiting

Some graduates who apply while meeting the applicable statutory conditions may work while IRCC processes the PGWP application. Whether a person can work is a legal-status question and should not be assumed from submission alone.

Frequently asked questions

Do all graduates need an eligible field of study?

No. Degree graduates and certain transition cases are exempt. Other applicants may need an eligible CIP code.

Do all PGWP applicants need a language test now?

Many do, but the requirement depends on the application date and program category.

Can I apply after my study permit expires?

Possibly in limited circumstances, but status and restoration issues can become critical. Early review is safer than waiting until after expiry.
