A study permit application is more than an admission letter and bank balance. IRCC considers whether the applicant meets the statutory requirements, has the required documents and presents a coherent temporary study plan that is supported by credible financial and personal evidence.
Admission and attestation documents
Most applicants need a valid letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution and, unless an exception applies, a provincial or territorial attestation letter. The program, school, start date and documents should all match the application narrative.
Financial capacity must be both sufficient and explainable
For applications made on or after September 1, 2026, IRCC lists $23,448 in annual living expenses for one person outside Quebec, excluding tuition and transportation. The amount is only the starting point: the source, history and genuine availability of funds also matter.
The study plan should explain progression
Applicants should connect past education and employment to the proposed program and future career. A change of field, mature-student application or apparently lower credential can still be credible, but the reason should be addressed directly.
Family and immigration history are part of the story
Relatives in Canada, previous refusals, past travel, employment responsibilities and family circumstances can influence how the application is assessed. Omitting inconvenient facts is usually worse than explaining them properly.
Think about compliance after approval
A study permit has conditions. Students should understand full-time study requirements, work authorization and whether the chosen program is PGWP-eligible rather than treating admission as the end of immigration planning.
Frequently asked questions
Does paying first-year tuition guarantee approval?
No. Tuition payment can strengthen financial evidence, but the application is assessed as a whole.
Is a PAL or TAL always required?
No. There are exemptions, but many study permit applicants need one. The current IRCC rules should be checked for the specific program and applicant.
Can a mature student obtain a study permit?
Yes, if the application meets the requirements. Mature applicants often benefit from a clear explanation of career progression, finances and the reason for returning to study.
