A permanent resident card is normally required for a permanent resident returning to Canada on a commercial carrier. Permanent residents in Canada can apply to renew an expiring or expired card or replace a lost, stolen or damaged card.

Eligibility to apply
A person applying for a PR card must have permanent resident status and be in Canada. IRCC does not mail PR cards outside Canada.
Residency history
The application requires a travel and address history that may be used to assess compliance with the residency obligation. Long or complex absences should be reviewed carefully.
Urgent processing
IRCC provides urgent processing in limited circumstances. Supporting proof of the urgency and travel plans is required, and the applicant should not rely on urgent processing unless the criteria are met.
Outside Canada
A permanent resident outside Canada without a valid PR card generally needs a PRTD to return on a commercial carrier.
